The 1st Conference of the Ohio Chapter of R-AMA
The 1st (inaugural) Conference of the Ohio Chapter took place in Cleveland, OH on May 14th of 2004. More than 50 medical professionals from Cleveland, Columbus and Toledo came to the Jubilee Restaurant to establish the first local chapter of the national Association. Dr. George Muenster (General Surgery – Cleveland, OH) opened this meeting:

Good Evening Everyone!!!
I am Dr. George Muenster. Welcome to our first Ohio Chapter of R-AMA meeting. I would like to thank each and every one of you personally for being here tonight on this momentous occasion. For tonight’s agenda, we have the following:
· Our speaker tonight is Dr. Franklin Michota, the Head of the Department of Clinical Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, who will discuss new developments in DVT prophylaxis.
· Establishment of the Ohio Chapter of R-AMA
· Information from the President of R-AMA - Dr. Boris Vinogradsky
· A banquet and entertainment program.

Also with us tonight are attorneys: Mr. Georg Abakumov and Mr. Edward Brown.

My thanks go to the pharmaceutical companies Aventis, Sanofi-Synthelabo, Ethicon, Endo and Pfizer for making this evening possible. Please, visit their product displays.

At this time I would like to introduce Dr. Franklin Michota, who will speak on the subject “New events on DVT prophylaxis.” After his speech, we will continue our business meeting. Without further adieu, please welcome Dr. Michota.

(Dr. Michota’s presentation)

Thank you, Dr. Michota, for a very informative presentation. I would also like to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to be here with us this evening.

And now getting back to our business at hand:
Over the last year, Dr. Vinogradsky and I spent a lot of time and effort developing the ground for the Ohio Chapter of R-AMA – a large organized local group of Russian-speaking physicians in the US. It was not easy, but we are moving forward and today’s meeting is a proof of our progress. First off all, I would like to express my appreciation to Dr. Nikolay Vasilyev, a researcher at the Cleveland Clinic, for accepting a position as a Board member. He is very active on the national level – leading the Young Researchers Committee Project, the Scholarship Program and on top of everything he is also the Editor-in-Chief of the R-AMA Journal.

We will need to elect a Secretary and a Treasurer also; if there is anyone who would like to volunteer for those positions, please, submit your name. I am looking forward to working with the members to write rules, regulations, by-laws, and registering the OH Chapter with the State of Ohio.

Mr. Edward Brown has given us support in legal issues concerning R-AMA and we deeply appreciate his help.

My plan is to setup:
· Speaker’s Bureau from our members and from the outside speakers;
· The Educational Committee, so that we could provide high quality medical education to our members and help them in the best patient care to the community;
· Russian medical students group;
· Exchange of speakers, physicians and students from abroad;
· A program helping physicians to find residency programs;
· A database of medical vacancies (due to illness, retirement, moving etc.);
· Conditions for forming new partnerships and associations;
· “Who’s Who” - the newsletter.

Please, fill out the questionnaire that you have and return it to us, so that we have updated information. Please, feel free to write any
suggestions that you may have.
Lastly, I would like to thank Mr. Michael Feinestein, from the Russian Television channel. I would like to congratulate and compliment him on the fine work he has done for the Russian community in general and medical community and R-AMA in particular.

He is not here tonight, but his wife and his cameraman are with us. Personally, I would like to express my appreciation to the
following people:
· Dr. Boris Vinogradsky, for his involvement in organization of this meeting, and supporting my idea of organizing the Ohio Chapter of RAMA;
· I would also like to thank Dr. Vinogradsky’s wife - Irina, for doing her part of this work, as well;
· I would like to thank Mrs. Marilyn Lowe, my office manager, for setting up this program;
· Ms. Eva Zaichik, for coming on such short notice to help with the registration.

After short presentation given by the President of R-AMA, Dr. Boris Vinogradsky, who updated the participants on what is happening on the national level since the 1st R-AMA Conference in 2003 the dinner was served.
